Lanzarote, the different island

Just 130 km. away from the African coast, Lanzarote is the most Eastern Canary Island. Its name comes from the Genoese seafarer Lanceloto Malocello, which arrived to its coasts in 1312. This name is as suggestive as the name of its capital city, Arrecife (reef), located in the East of the Island. Its characteristic warm and dry weather is due to the clash between high temperatures coming from the African Sahara and the ocean current of the Gulf of Mexico.

In Lanzarote, the visitor has the feeling of being in a place yet to be created.

In 1993 it received the status of ‘Biosphere Reserve’ by UNESCO. One of the great promoters to achieve this was its versatile artist César Manrique, who through its works uniquely integrating art and nature, he left behind a deep trace in the landscape and identity of the Island. The natural spots of Montaña de Fuego, Cueva de Los Verdes, Jameos del Agua and the Natural Park of Timanfaya are just some examples of its enormous natural richness.

Over two million visitors find every year the relax they sought for in the island of Lanzarote. A perfect environment to enjoy the sea in all its variants. Beautiful beaches with either white, golden or black sand, like the ones of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or El Papagayo, most of them having calmed and warm waters. Among the most widely practised activities, there are the fishing, scuba diving and deep-sea diving, as well as nautical sports like surfing, water-skiing and windsurfing.

Natural beauty and contrasts

The island of Fuerteventura is the second biggest island in the Canary Archipelago. It is an island of contrasts with an enormous natural beauty, showing a sober landscape with a volcanic origin in red and golden colours and shaped by the coolness of the trade winds and the warmness of the close African continent.

Its capital city, Puerto del Rosario, is a space of mild forms open to the sea, inviting its visitors to enjoy its calm. Vast virgin beaches of blue and turquoise waters, among which La Oliva, Tarajal, Jandía and Corralejo, stand out. Its sandy zones mingle with volcanic lands in immense plains and low volcanic cones.

Though it is visited every year by a million and a half tourists, this island has kept intact its extensive natural heritage, with such natural spots like the Montaña de Tindaya, Montaña Cardón, Malpaís de la Arena or Caldera de Gairía, and the Natural Parks of Dunas de Corralejo and Lobos, Pozo Negro, Jandía and Betancuria. The neighbour Lobos Island is only occupied by its Lighthouse, which act as a guide for fishermen fishing by its coasts due to its enormous richness in its sea bottoms.

Fuerteventura has built up its character around its sea. This land has been successively considered as the mythic Altantis, as adventurous land for British corsairs, as land of fishermen, as a land for the exile and finally, as ideal for people wishing to escape from hectic days. Moreover it hosts every year great sea sports events, like the Windsurf World Cup or the Deep-Sea Fishing Championship.

The miniature continent

Gran Canaria is known as the Miniature Continent due to its incredible variety of landscapes and contrasts.

The island has sheer mountainous areas, small pleasant villages of white houses with red roofs and green and beautiful valleys studded with banana trees. At the South part of the Island there is a desert area, in which its most outstanding example is the Natural Park of the Maspalomas Dunes, more than six kilometres wide. These are combined with landscapes of great plant exuberance, like the Natural Park of Tamadaba or the emblematic Roque Nublo.

Gran Canaria knows how to combine different attractions so as to win the heart of over 3 million visitors every year.

Among its great offer of beaches, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas outstand at the South, and Las Canteras in the capital city.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of this Island. In this cosmopolitan city we can find a rich and intense cultural offer: from its International Film Festival to its famous Carnival, going also from music and dance festivals like the WOMAD, to its traditional Processions and festivities.

Wandering around Las Palmas of Gran Canaria we will discover beautiful places like the Cathedral of St. Anne, the quarter of Vegueta, the House-Museum of Christopher Columbus or the Atlantic Centre of Modern Art.

Full of a great natural richness, the Canary Archipelago is one of the most exotic and pleasant tourist destinations in all Europe. Thanks to its privileged location in the Tropic of Cancer and the mild trade winds from the African continent, the Canary Islands offer their visitors the gift of mild spring weather throughout the year.

Legendary land for sailors in ancient times and for Classic Greek and Latin authors, which place here the Eden or the Hesperides Gardens, nowadays they still astonish for their natural and cultural treasures. Welcoming and modern islands that look on the new millennium without losing its traditional touch.

The Relaxia hotel complexes are found on the Eastern Islands of the archipelago: Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
