Just 130 km. away from the African coast, Lanzarote is the most Eastern Canary Island. Its name comes from the Genoese seafarer Lanceloto Malocello, which arrived to its coasts in 1312. This name is as suggestive as the name of its capital city, Arrecife (reef), located in the East of the Island. Its characteristic warm and dry weather is due to the clash between high temperatures coming from the African Sahara and the ocean current of the Gulf of Mexico.
In Lanzarote, the visitor has the feeling of being in a place yet to be created.
In 1993 it received the status of ‘Biosphere Reserve’ by UNESCO. One of the great promoters to achieve this was its versatile artist César Manrique, who through its works uniquely integrating art and nature, he left behind a deep trace in the landscape and identity of the Island. The natural spots of Montaña de Fuego, Cueva de Los Verdes, Jameos del Agua and the Natural Park of Timanfaya are just some examples of its enormous natural richness.
Over two million visitors find every year the relax they sought for in the island of Lanzarote. A perfect environment to enjoy the sea in all its variants. Beautiful beaches with either white, golden or black sand, like the ones of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or El Papagayo, most of them having calmed and warm waters. Among the most widely practised activities, there are the fishing, scuba diving and deep-sea diving, as well as nautical sports like surfing, water-skiing and windsurfing.
